The Discretionary Assistance Fund (DAF) is a financial support service delivered by the Welsh Government and its partners. DAF provides emergency assistance to individuals and families facing financial hardship or urgent needs due to crises. DAF offers various forms of aid to help people manage unexpected expenses and maintain their wellbeing during difficult times

Purpose

DAF’s purpose is to:

  • provide financial assistance to those in urgent need or facing severe financial hardship.
  • support individuals and families in crisis situations, helping them meet essential needs.

Eligibility Criteria

To access the DAF, applicants must:

  • live in Wales
  • prove a financial need or hardship
  • meet specific income requirements

Types of Assistance

Emergency Assistance Payments (EAP)

Financial help for immediate and urgent needs such as food, utility bills (gas and electricity), and essential clothing.

Individual Assistance Payments (IAP)

Support for purchasing essential household items, such as:

  • furniture
  • appliances (refrigerators, washing machines etc)
  • other necessary goods (bedding, kitchenware etc)

Additional Support

DAF may provide additional help with utility bills, travel costs (in emergency situations)m and other urgent needs.

DAF is a safety net for those in urgent need. Its aims to ease financial crises and support individuals in maintaining a basic standard of living.
